Topic of Conversation—“How do you hire and promote the right people”

Every business stives to hire “best fit” talent, assemble and manage employees in a way that pushes everyone to the top of their game.  When the design of the organization, its leadership, its culture, and its team dynamics are approached intentionally and strategically—supported by people data—companies have a much better chance of achieving their desired business objectives.  We will explore best practices around hiring and promoting the right people in your organization. What tactics do you use in the interview and selection process to ensure the best hires? What methods have you seen be unsuccessful?  How do we ensure we are promoting the “RIGHT” people and what support do we provide them in their transition?

We are providing all attendees the opportunity to experience “talent optimization” firsthand by taking a 6-minute “The Predictive Index” link included. We will send this result to all takers (regardless of attendance) and use the results of those attending to help elevate our conversation. Here is the link:  https://assessment.predictiveindex.com/bo/MFh/2024_LWHRA#page0  All LWHRA can complete this.  We will email your results even if you are not able to attend the meeting.

January Virtual Chapter Meeting The Allyship Challenge

Ask yourself what it means to be an “ally.” Do you fully understand the word’s meaning, or are you jumping on another verbal bandwagon to fit in? It is easy for us to announce ourselves as “allies,” but “ally” is nothing more than an empty buzzword. Assuming the role of an “ally” is simply not enough. We need to be stewards and protectors for those who experience discrimination. In other words, if we want to transform society, we need to be Advocates and Accomplices. The Allyship Challenge™ workshop will explain the difference between an ally, an advocate, and accomplice and explain the steps on how to advance to each level.

Speaker Bio:

Dr. Kimberly Harden is the best-selling author of The Allyship Challenge® and an award-winning educator and diversity, equity, and inclusion consultant, and keynote speaker. She advises corporate, nonprofit, and academic leaders on their recruitment, hiring, retention, and promotion strategies. She also helps organizations shift from a traditional diversity model to a model that emphasizes, not only diversity, but also equity, belonging, interpersonal communication, and talent management (DEBIT Training™).

Dr. Harden is passionate about justice, leadership, care, and transformation. In 2022, she received the Innovative Response to Social Justice Award from the Commission of Social Justice Educators, the MLK Community, Equity, and Social Justice Award from Washington State University, and the Alumni Award for Excellence in Mentoring from The University of Washington.

Dr. Harden also served as a professor in the Department of Communication at Seattle University. Before she became an educator, Dr. Harden spent over 15 years working in the healthcare sector. Dr. Harden has spoken at various events including the Be on the Rise D&I Summit, Ignite Seattle’s Education Lab, One Woman Fearless! Summit, and the Rise to the Occasion Women’s Conference.

Dr. Harden received her undergraduate degree in Communication from The University of Washington, a master’s degree in Communication and Leadership Studies from Gonzaga University, and a doctorate in Educational Leadership from Concordia University. Dr. Harden agrees with Aristotle’s assertion that “Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.”

December Virtual Chapter Meeting!

Cost: LWHRA Members - $35 | Non-Members - $50 | Student - $10

Register to Attend:  After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.

Presentation:  In the middle of every challenge lies great opportunity. This is more than a motivational meme. This is reality. Over the past several years, HR’s value has been on display like never before. They were the masters of the mayhem, the heroes who kept the wheels on the bus, and the navigators of uncharted waters.

What now?

In this session, Jen Lambert will discuss what organizations need most from their HR leaders as they move forward. She will discuss:

  • Recruiting: When does it get easier? The data says not anytime soon, but there are winning moves you can make to get more than your fair share of talent.

  • Culture: How do you build a culture in meaningful ways in the new org? Ps. It’s going to take more than posters and Zoom happy hours.

  • HR—It’s Not Just for HR Anymore: How do you infuse your leadership with HR best practices and gain their willing cooperation? This is a “strike while the iron is hot” opportunity that shouldn’t be missed.

  • Can we talk about Gen Z? We’ll do a deep dive into what the data says about the youngest generation in the workplace. Yes, you can win their hearts and minds. Yes, you can get their commitment and engagement. And get ready because the Alpha generation is headed to a workplace near you soon.

Speaker: Jen Lambert

Jenifer Lambert is the Chief Strategy Officer and partner with TERRA Staffing Group, one of the largest privately-held staffing firms based in the country. TERRA is comprised of 18 offices in the Seattle, Portland (OR), Phoenix, Denver and Dallas markets. TERRA has been 11 years running named to ClearlyRated's Best of Staffing list--an honor awarded to less than 2% of staffing firms nationally based on exceptionally high client and candidate satisfaction scores. In 2020, TERRA was named by Staffing Industry Analysts (SIA) as one of the “Fastest Growing Staffing Firms in America” and in 2022 named by Puget Sound Business Journal to their “Fast 50” as one of the fastest growing mid-market companies headquartered in the Seattle area.

November Legal Update:

Covid Rules, Wage Liens, NDA Limitations, and New Salary Range Disclosure Requirements—What Washington Employers Need To Know Going Into 2023

Topic: Employment Law Update - Salary Range Disclosure, COVID, NDA’s, & More

Time: Nov 8, 2022 11:50 AM Pacific Time (US and Canada)

Cost: LWHRA Members - $35 | Non-Members - $50 | Student - $10

Presentation:  Change is on the horizon in 2023. With Covid mandates loosening, more and more remote employees are returning to work at the office part-time or full-time. Companies must carefully navigate these issues to demonstrate compassion consistent with productivity and fairness and achieve legal compliance. This seminar examines such issues and the legal requirements governing leave and accommodation in the new and varied landscape created by the pandemic. The seminar also covers new Washington laws: permitting wage liens against employers, barring certain nondisclosure agreements as part of settlements of specified employment claims, and imposing new salary range disclosure requirements that will take effect in 2023. Don’t miss this essential employment law update!

Speaker: Josh Brittingham represents and counsels management clients in connection with all types of labor and employment matters arising under federal and state law. He helps private and public employers reduce their legal exposure by implementing effective personnel policies and practices. His wide-ranging practice includes drafting and enforcing employment, confidentiality, and non-competition agreements, and defending claims regarding wrongful discharge, discrimination, sexual harassment, and wage-and-hour issues in state and federal courts and administrative agencies. Mr. Brittingham also provides representation on labor relations matters, such as collective bargaining, arbitrations, union organizational campaigns, and National Labor Relations Board proceedings.

Mr. Brittingham has extensive litigation experience. Before focusing exclusively on labor and employment law, he spent nearly a decade litigating commercial matters (including contract breaches, tortious interference claims, and business owner disputes), real estate matters (such as lease, easement, and boundary disputes), and employment matters. In the past, he also formed companies, advised clients on real estate transactions, and drafted purchase and sale agreements, leases, easements, and other contracts.

Mr. Brittingham comes from a business background. Both of his parents are small business owners, and, before practicing law, he worked as a project manager and business analyst in the financial services industry. This businesses background gives Mr. Brittingham a unique perspective which he harnesses to help employers obtain satisfactory results. Mr. Brittingham takes pride in tackling legal problems so the companies that he represents can thrive.
