One of the goals of the College Relations initiative is to promote mutually beneficial interaction between SHRM students and practicing HR Professionals. The LWHRA chapter's involvement in local colleges is part of a much larger effort by SHRM to promote the HR profession and to ensure students have a voice in the HR community.

UW Bothell SHRM Student Chapter


Welcome to the UW Bothell SHRM student chapter. The UW Bothell SHRM student chapter is for current students interested in learning more about the field of Human Resources (HR) Management and pursuing a career in HR.  The chapter was formed with LWHRA sponsors in the winter semester of 2017.  Our goal is to inform students and increase awareness of the HR profession. Our mission is to provide current information regarding the Human Resource profession and connect students with opportunities to network with local professionals, scholarship opportunities available through SHRM.org, and internship opportunities with local businesses.

LWIT Student Chapter

Currently, LWHRA is the sponsoring professional chapter for the Lake Washington Institute of Technology (LWIT) Student SHRM Chapter. This sponsorship provides students the opportunity to supplement their classroom education with networking and learning opportunities through forums and information exchanges.

LWHRA provides financial support for various learning and HR professional events. In addition, LWHRA assists the LWIT Student Chapter with:

  • Student conferences and case competitions
  • Speakers
  • Advising and mentoring
  • Fundraising

Bellevue Community College

LWHRA also provides volunteers to help Bellevue Community College with their Mock Interview and Employer Panels which are held a couple of times each quarter.

Our goal is to continue to expand our support to other colleges throughout the Seattle Metro area.

Workforce Readiness

The strategy behind the Workforce Readiness initiative is to increase the Puget Sound region's economic viability by focusing on developing its people. Specifically, the focus is on enabling low-skilled individuals to move into living-wage jobs. This is accomplished by working with local organizations that provide area residents with both training and a social support system. LWHRA currently partners with one such local organization -Seattle Jobs Initiative-and has long-term plans to expand its support to other organizations.

Seattle Jobs Initiative addresses a critical need of Seattle's low-income individuals by providing job training and support services—including access to housing, childcare, transportation and counseling—which together make it possible for people to secure, retain and advance in jobs that pay a living wage.

Lack of job skills, transportation, housing and childcare, and limited English proficiency can be major hurdles to long-term job success. Seattle Jobs Initiative approaches the problem from a big-picture point-of-view. Through partnerships and innovative approaches, SJI eliminates these barriers by providing participants with the full range of services necessary to ensure their long-term financial stability. By partnering with community-based organizations (CBOs), community colleges, and employers, SJI links Seattle's low-income and low-skilled residents to jobs – jobs that pay living wages, offer room for advancement, and include necessary work supports such as health coverage, sick leave and paid vacation. Its policy team complements its efforts on the ground by keeping abreast of the current labor market and supporting legislative changes that improve access to training and services for low-income residents. Seattle Jobs Initiative's comprehensive approach creates real opportunities for Seattle residents to support themselves and their families.

LWHRA members support the Seattle Jobs Initiative in two ways:

  • Participating as mentors for graduates of Seattle Jobs Initiative's Medical Business Information Technology training program.
  • Putting on an annual event (lunch program) for current students to inspire, encourage, and educate them regarding their upcoming entry into a new career.
