Help! I'm Invisible!

Session Description:
This presentation is designed to provide HR professionals with knowledge and guidance on the impact of invisible disabilities on their workforce and their organization’s bottom line. The discussion will include information on the prevalence and cost of invisible disabilities. Participants will learn disability etiquette, and techniques to encourage disclosure of invisible disabilities by their employees. Participants will learn ways to evaluate their current business processes to provide an optimal workplace for all employees. Participants will leave with tools and resources for use in making identified changes in their organization.


Nancy Kasmar, MS, SPHR, CCP, is President of Compensation Connections. Ms. Kasmar has over 25 years of management experience in addition to eight years in human resources. She received her Master of Science in Nursing from the University of California, San Francisco, and a Certificate in Management from the University of California, San Diego. Nancy holds a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) designation with an additional certification as a Certified Compensation Professional (CCP). Nancy has worked with hundreds of companies throughout North America as a compensation consultant over the past six years. She is the 2014 President of Lake Washington Human Resource Association, a local SHRM affiliate with nearly 1,400 members. In addition to her professional and volunteer responsibilities, Nancy delivers presentations on HR topics, including compensation and benefits, throughout Washington State.

As a cancer survivor and the mother of a young adult with High Functioning Autism, Nancy is uniquely qualified to speak on the topic of invisible disabilities.

Ruth Alstadt has worked as a Human Resources Generalist for Boeing on HR Strategy & Integration Teams (both SCM&O and BCA) since she joined the company in August of 2013. She recently joined the BCA HR Strategy & Integration team where she is responsible to proactively partner and influence across the BCA Organization in the areas of leadership development and HR process improvement and policy integration between the Enterprise, BCA and local Business Units. At SCM&O, she was responsible to proactively partner and influence across the Business Unit to further the People Focus Areas, specifically Leadership and Culture.


Previously, Ruth was the Human Resources Director for Data I/O Corporation, a multinational public electronics manufacturing company. In that role, she was responsible for all programs, policies, practices and processes of the International Human Resources function. In addition, she was a Member of the executive team, working to develop and execute the company’s goals and objectives. This position provided opportunities for increasing strategic partnership and coaching of the company’s leaders and managers to facilitate organizational and cultural change.


Prior to her manufacturing industry experience, Ruth held several Human Resource management roles in the legal industry, for a total of 14 years of HR experience.


Ruth currently serves as President on the Board of Directors for the Washington State Human Resources Council. She also is a member of the Lake Washington Human Resources Chapter, where she previously served as President on the Board of Directors. In addition to being a certified Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR), she is an alumnus of the University of Washington, where she obtained her Bachelors Degree.
