Presentation Description:

There is some irony in our language, as we call the most challenging skills to learn “soft”. Skills like communication, problem solving and time management. Yet, they are more important than ever for working professionals to master. In fact, The World Economic Forum listed sixteen crucial proficiencies for the 21st century worker, and ten of them are non-technical. We are working during a time where there is a gap in skills needed, and businesses are having to adjust quickly. SHRM representative, Erica Young, will share insights about soft skills and the gaps that exist. Practical tips and reproducible exercises will be provided for working professionals at all levels on how to individually improve soft skills, and train others to do the same.

Speaker Bio:

Erica Young, like many millennials, entered the workforce when there were less jobs than there were graduates. She entered the workforce by fulfilling a personal mission to complete two AmeriCorps terms of service. Erica then went on to manage programs, volunteers and staff in the non-profit community within Washington, DC. It was through these roles that she discovered her passion for organizational development, strategic planning, and training.

She was raised in rural America, but spent time studying in Philadelphia, New York City and North Carolina.  Having gained experience in volunteer human capital management, Erica transitioned her career into industrial/organizational psychology. She currently works at the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and expects to graduate from University of Maryland- Baltimore County with a Masters in Industrial/Organizational Psychology and Instructional Design.

Erica currently lives outside of Washington, DC and has many hobbies. When she is not at SHRM or school, you can find her tending to her many plants and cat, Suki. She also conducts professional development and career planning workshops for AmeriCorps service members.
